Marvel Wolverine memes have reached the stage where I can no longer hear “heightened mutant senses” without picturing Logan following a glowing cloud of cartoon stink through a hallway. Insomniac’s Wolverine finally launched on PS5 on September 15, and while plenty of people are enjoying the stabbing, the internet has become fixated on a different fantasy: what if a $70 superhero game simply trusted you to recognize a door?
The game arrived to generally positive-but-muted reviews, settling around the high-70s on Metacritic rather than the 85–90 territory of Insomniac’s Spider-Man games.
That would normally produce a week of reasonable discussion about combat, pacing and level design.
Instead, we got “Wolverine fart gas.”

Marvel Wolverine Memes Have Named The Scent Trail “Fart Gas”
The feature causing the most damage is Wolverine’s scent-tracking ability, which highlights objects and paths with large glowing visual effects.
Journalist Gene Park jokingly called it “Wolverine fart gas,” and that terminology immediately won the election. Know Your Meme documents the phrase spreading alongside a viral post saying the game was designed for “the average TikTok user.”
This is the problem with giving the internet naming rights.
Your expensive accessibility-and-navigation feature can have a perfectly respectable internal name for six years, and then one person says “fart gas” on Thursday and everybody at the studio has to hear that phrase during Monday’s design meeting.

The broader complaint is less about one glowing trail and more about visual guidance: markers, highlighted interactables, yellow paint and the general feeling that AAA games are terrified you might become confused for nine consecutive seconds.
Then Players Realized Some QTEs Barely Need The Q
Things got worse when clips started circulating of quick-time events completing even when players didn’t press the requested button.
One September 10 clip showing exactly that passed 3.5 million views, according to Know Your Meme. A later motorcycle-chase clip showed sections succeeding while the player kept their hands off the controller entirely.

That’s where the “game for TikTok attention spans” jokes really took off.
There’s something uniquely funny about Wolverine violently crashing through a cinematic chase while the actual human being holding the DualSense could apparently be making a sandwich.
Why it matters: accessibility options and readable game design are good things. The meme backlash is really about where assistance becomes over-assistance — that weird point where the game stops helping you play and starts politely offering to finish the activity while you watch.
Seventy Dollars Makes Every Annoyance Funnier
The internet is significantly more forgiving about dumb mechanics when the game costs twelve dollars during a Steam sale.
At full price, people begin auditing.
Campaign length? Audited.
Waypoint density? Audited.
Whether Wolverine could have smelled the objective naturally instead of following radioactive Febreze? Absolutely audited.

Some of the memes are also poking fun at the outrage itself. A high-70s review average is not a catastrophic failure, but gaming discourse has reached a place where anything below “instant generational masterpiece” gets treated like the developer released a toaster full of bees.

That’s why the nostalgia jokes work too. People will defend a janky older Wolverine game with their lives, then see a 78 attached to a new one and begin drafting a congressional inquiry.
Insomniac Says It Is Listening
The important post-launch wrinkle is that Insomniac has acknowledged the criticism rather than pretending none of this is happening.
Community director James Stevenson said the team had been “100% listening” and was “cooking hard” in response to feedback.

Of course, saying “we’re cooking” in 2026 is dangerous because gamers have heard enough culinary PR language to open their own restaurant.
Still, it suggests at least some of the annoyances may change after launch.
The Internet Has Decided Logan Needs A Minute
For now, Wolverine has become the latest big-budget game to get kicked around by a meme cycle that is much more dramatic than the reviews themselves.

And once gaming Twitter smells blood, it has Logan’s heightened senses beat by a mile.

The game may end up aging perfectly well after patches, settings tweaks and everyone calming down. But “fart gas” is permanent.
You cannot patch language.
