Picture mile 7 on Sunday morning. Your quads have filed a formal complaint, and a stranger on the curb lifts a sign promising one mile to go, next to a grinning face that knows exactly what it is doing. That was the 2026 New York City Marathon in one frame. Around 60,000 runners crossed all five boroughs, and the people watching answered with a wall of funny NYC Marathon signs, most of them lying on purpose.

That smiling face is the why would I deceive you meme, and it was the unofficial mascot of the race. Andreas Almgren won the men’s race in his marathon debut and Sheila Chepkirui took the women’s title, according to NBC New York’s list of the 2026 NYC Marathon winners, but the real competition was on the sidewalk. I would have believed every single one of these, which is why nobody lets me near a starting line.
Funny Marathon Signs That Lie
The beauty of the deceive sign is the commitment. One version swears marathons are easy. Another promises the finish line is right around the corner, which is technically true if you count every corner between Staten Island and Central Park.

Then a few spectators switched from encouragement to threats. A poster full of horror villains telling runners to move faster is genuinely good coaching, and I am a little ashamed of how fast I would go. The $3 train sign is the same trick in reverse: it tells the truth, which is somehow crueler.

Running From Your Problems
A big chunk of this year’s signs skipped the running entirely and went after the reasons people sign up in the first place. Therapy, the job market, a run club that turned out to involve running. I love a crowd that heckles your life choices instead of your pace.

The tariff sign might be the best economic reporting of 2026: the marathon is now 43K, and not one person on that block argued. Somebody also informed a runner named Evan that his PTO is out, which is the most New York way to make a stranger sprint.

The 67 sign is pure 2026 internet. I laughed before I fully understood it, which is how I handle most things now.
Extremely New York
Only this city could fit a pizza box, a Knicks prophecy and a pep talk about rats into one Sunday morning. The goldens were the only sign on the course that kept its promise, and I would have stopped running to collect.

Local politics showed up the New York way, folded into a joke. One poster borrowed Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s face, another rattled off the whole city’s identity before landing on a sub-four finish, and a third simply ordered a computer to make him run faster, which is also how I use spreadsheets.

The Mile 10 Warnings
Some signs were less cheering and more public safety announcement. Never trust a fart after mile 10 is advice I will carry for the rest of my life, and I do not even run. A couple of others went full innuendo, and I will leave those right there in case someone is reading over your shoulder.

Then there is the keep pushing face-through-the-sign gag, which turns a running cliche into a delivery room joke. At least two separate groups built one with craft supplies, which means it was planned.

Peak Sign Culture
By the end, the signs were commenting on themselves. One couple wrote VIRAL SIGN in giant letters and, well, here we are. Kris Jenner made an appearance too, with the only pep talk anyone really needs.

My prediction for next November: the deceive face comes back undefeated, the tariff sign quietly updates to 45K, and I will be on that curb with a sign I spent four hours on that says one mile to go. Why would I deceive you?
