Why is a whole city arguing about which dog is the roundest, and why do I suddenly have a favorite? Fat Dogs of Delhi is an Instagram contest in the style of Alaska’s Fat Bear Week, where 64 of the capital’s chunkiest dogs went head to head in story polls starting Sept. 24, and the Fat Dogs of Delhi memes have not slowed down since. AFP’s report on India’s fat dog vote says the account is closing in on 100,000 followers.
The grand finale runs today and tomorrow, Sept. 30 and Oct. 1, and there are real ballot boxes at four cafés from 2 to 7 p.m. today. That is more election infrastructure than my HOA has managed in eleven years.
The campaign branch is where this went from cute to fully televised election night. Kutta Singh of Rohini got a vintage political poster with VOTE printed right across her belly, and her supporters told friends overseas they could vote too. Then Blinkit, the grocery delivery app, publicly backed her and promised free treats for the winner, which is the most honest campaign promise I have heard in my lifetime.
Her team even posted a thank-you from the candidate herself, who accepted the love and support the way I accept compliments: facing the wall, near a motorcycle, hoping nobody asks me to make a speech. The fan accounts kept it simple after that.
Who Decides Between Two Fat Dogs Named Max?
The bracket itself is the second branch, and it is pure Instagram story chaos: two dogs, one poll bar, and a city taking it very personally. In the screenshots going around, Tara, formerly known as Khan Saheb, led Mr. Humayunpur 53 to 47, and Hero was flattening Chotu 88 to 12. Somebody also had to choose between Max from Ghaziabad and Max from Faridabad, which is less of a vote and more of a custody hearing.
Then there is Chewbacca Raza Singh, a blond heavyweight photographed lounging in a pile of flower petals like a retired king, who was pulling 79 percent against Sultan when one fan predicted a sweep. Chewbacca did not make the final. I refuse to believe that dog lost anything that matters.
What Happens When the Favorite Is Already a Legend?
The final is where it gets tender. Gola, a round brown dog from SDA Market in Hauz Khas who also answers to Kebab and Rajpal Singh, was reported to have died during the contest, and she is still on the ballot and still winning hearts. According to The Statesman’s preview of the Gola and Googoo grand finale, she won her semifinal against Hero by 69,638 votes. That is not a margin. That is a love letter.
Googoo is the underdog in the most literal sense. He beat Tara by just 4,873 votes and reportedly lost weight along the way, which is a bold strategy in a contest about being the fattest, and the exact opposite of what I do every holiday season. Meanwhile, people are loudly arguing about whether Gurgaon should get a vote at all, even though one of the four ballot boxes sits in a Gurgaon café.
So I have to ask: are you voting for the legend or the comeback kid? And if you are in Delhi today, is anybody at the café actually checking where you live?
