Every fall, a stranger with a comb and a gray-blue backdrop takes a photo that will outlive us all, and the blunder years are the proof. My mom still has mine framed, which feels like a hostage situation.

Blunder years portrait of a boy in a patchwork plaid suit posing on a chair.

That kid committed to the plaid, head to toe, and I have never been that sure of anything in my life. Here is everybody else who was just as sure.

School photo of a teen with a bleached center spike and a lip piercing.

The spike was load-bearing.

Blunder years snapshot of a smiling teen in a bucket hat and shiny silver shirt.
Little girl in a lace gown, flower hat and pearls posing with an antique phone.
Spiky-haired teen playing bass in a bedroom full of Michigan banners and VHS tapes.

The VHS collection is doing a lot of heavy lifting here.

Girl with huge feathered hair, hoop earrings and a pink sweatshirt on a blue backdrop.
Graduation photo from 2013 of a young man with shaggy side-swept hair under his cap.

The cap is technically in there.

Two sisters with matching bangs in bright patterned shorts, one wearing a Little Mermaid shirt.

Mom picked both outfits and regrets nothing.

Glamour shot of a woman with enormous teased curly hair and a purple jacket.

That hair has its own zip code.

Jinkies, indeed.

The side-eye still works, for the record.

Heading to a very important business meeting.

Blunder years portrait of a teen in a white cowboy hat and striped western shirt.

The emo phase deserves its own museum wing, and I say that as a man who once owned a studded belt and no reason to wear it. Those side bangs required a level of daily maintenance I cannot manage today for my actual taxes. Somewhere a flip-out digital camera still remembers all of it, and it is not telling.

The 90s school pictures and big-hair glamour shots are a different kind of brave. Those bad haircuts were not accidents, they were appointments. Somebody’s mom looked at a bowl cut, a bandana and a tie-dye shirt and said, yes, this is the one we mail to Grandma. I respect that more than anything I have done on purpose, including my wedding.

The funny thing is that nobody in these photos was trying to be cringe. They were trying to be cool, or grown up, or just done with picture day, and that effort is the whole charm. We laugh because we recognize ourselves in there, and because somebody loved us enough to keep the evidence in a drawer.

Somewhere a school photographer is still telling all of us to tilt our chins down a little.

I went straight back to Funny School Photos Are a Permanent Time Capsule of Decisions That Should Have Been Stopped after this, then lost another twenty minutes in 40 Awkward Teenage Photos That’ll Make Millennials and GenXers Collectively Cringe. Bring a friend. Bring their yearbook too.
