The Thoughts on Lanterns meme is one of those formats where I saw the first edit, laughed, saw the fifth edit, laughed harder, and by the twentieth one started wondering whether Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler are legally required to walk through every fictional universe ever created. What began as a perfectly normal promotional image from HBO’s Lanterns has now become a universal two-person character generator. SpongeBob and Patrick. Walter White and Jesse. Cuphead and Mugman. Sonic and Shadow. Apparently all culture can now be reduced to two dudes approaching the camera on a rural road.

The original image features Pierre as John Stewart and Chandler as Hal Jordan, the two Green Lanterns at the center of HBO’s Earthbound mystery series. DC describes Lanterns as a detective story starring the pair as they investigate a murder in rural Nebraska, which explains why the source image already has such serious “two cops walking back from something unpleasant” energy. How The Thoughts On Lanterns Meme Actually Started

The format is wonderfully stupid in the most technically efficient way possible.

According to Know Your Meme, an X user posted the straightforward “Thoughts on Lanterns 2026?” question on September 4. A few days later, @jadeladeljadel reposted the shot with intentionally awful clothing edits slapped onto Pierre and Chandler. That version cleared 53,000 likes in two days and basically opened the laboratory door. (knowyourmeme.com)

That detail matters because the terrible editing is part of the joke.

This isn’t about producing perfect fan art. It’s about taking a prestige-TV publicity still and modifying it with the confidence of somebody who has just discovered the polygon tool in Microsoft Paint.

The worse the seam looks, the better.

Then Every Franchise On Earth Reported For Duty

Once Cuphead and Mugman showed up, there was no containing this thing.

That version reportedly pulled more than 47,000 likes in two days. SpongeBob and Patrick followed with more than 34,000 in a day, then Walter White and Jesse arrived with another version that crossed 35,000.

And that’s why the gallery gets so good.

“Thoughts on Cups?”

Sure.

“Thoughts on Bob?”

Fine.

“Thoughts on Inators?”

Now we’ve put Perry the Platypus and Dr. Doofenshmirtz on a highway and somehow the visual grammar still works.

Why it matters: the best exploitable memes don’t require explanation after the first example. Once you understand that the setup is “two recognizable characters + slightly mangled franchise title + same road,” your brain starts generating versions before you’ve even finished scrolling.

The Pairing Is Doing Most Of The Work

There’s something about two characters walking beside each other that makes almost every buddy dynamic fit.

Miles Morales and Peter B. Parker already belong together.

Jill and Carlos make sense.

Finn and Jake make sense.

Batman and the Riddler absolutely do not make sense, which somehow makes that one better.

Then you reach the especially cursed territory: Mabel and Grunkle Stan, Paimon and Aether, Sunflower and Crazy Dave, or a Fast & Furious version where the Green Lantern Corps has apparently been replaced by a family barbecue with nitrous.

The image is bland enough to accept anything.

That’s its superpower.

Eventually The Meme Started Eating Itself

The surest sign that a format has matured is when people stop parodying the source and start parodying the meme itself.

Hence “Thoughts on Thoughts?”

At that point we’re no longer discussing Lanterns. We’re staring into an infinite recursive thought bubble where one meme is contemplating another meme that is contemplating another meme until Kyle Chandler becomes pure internet geometry.

There’s also the beautiful “Thoughts on Lanterns” version where their heads are literally attached to Green Lantern power batteries.

We have reached semantic closure.

DC Accidentally Made The Perfect Blank Canvas

The funniest thing is that none of this necessarily reflects on Lanterns itself.

The show premiered in August and is an actual gritty superhero detective story with a proper cast, plot and all the expensive television things DC intended people to discuss. (dc.com)

Instead, one promotional shot happened to contain the ideal amount of empty road, dead-serious body language and visual symmetry.

That was enough.

Now the format belongs to Cuphead, Breaking Bad, Gravity Falls, Resident Evil, Sonic, Fortnite and whichever franchise gets dragged onto the asphalt next.
