I Get Homesick for Liminal Spaces I Have Never Actually Been To

Foggy skyscraper towering like a mountain over a highway as a police car passes, a real place straight out of liminal spaces.

I think every town has one spot that loaded wrong, like the universe ran out of budget halfway through. If an empty hallway has ever made your neck itch, you already know liminal spaces personally.

Endless white fence road leading to one red-roofed house in a liminal spaces meme.

That is not a location, that is a final boss. The rest of these places are real, mostly, and I have decided not to visit any of them alone this close to Halloween.

Empty roadside diner with a Coca-Cola fountain and a desert view at lunchtime.

The soda machine has seen things.

Steep orange concert stadium stairs seen from above, with a tweet joking about seeing god.
Hazy skyscraper looming like a mountain over a highway as a police car drives past.
Memory Lane street sign on a quiet rural corner, peak liminal spaces road trip material.

Turns out you can't go back. It's a private road.

Roadside warning sign in green countryside cautioning drivers about feral goats for two miles.
Dark castle on a foggy hilltop captioned as the spot for girls night.

RSVP by raven.

Alpine chalet beneath snowy mountains with the caption current status: isolationship.
Overgrown tree tunnel leading down a grassy path, one of the calmer liminal spaces.
Tattooed fighter in shorts sitting at a roadside vegetable stand with cucumbers, limes and beans.

Retirement looks peaceful.

Kid relaxing inside an empty store ice cream freezer while playing on a tablet.
Snow-covered New York avenue between towers, a city version of liminal spaces.

Same city, now with the volume turned off.

Two men in a car scene where the destination is a place called You'll See.
Mom crouching by a zoo fence beside her kids while a camel stands nearby.
Text exchange where a dad in Egypt jokes that the pyramids are only for mummies.

Dad jokes travel internationally with no visa.

Aerial view of stilt houses lining a lake shore like liminal spaces built over water.
Fan-made comic cover of Tintin in Saudi Arabia with a car flipping on two wheels.
Handwritten sign announcing a crying session at my house tonight at eight, pull up.

Finally, an event I'm qualified for.

Tweet showing a mall store named Soup, the strangest of the shopping mall liminal spaces.
Smiling police officers on a roadside holding up stacks of seized computer graphics cards.

Officer, I swear those were for school.

Golden sunlight glowing through fog between old stone office buildings, eerie liminal spaces downtown.
Flock of birds swirling around a traffic light pole under a blue evening sky.
Highway rest stop built on an artificial island at sea, wildly surreal liminal spaces.

Next exit: fish.

Red dunes of Hidalgo, Mexico, with grey rock formations and a lone hiker.
Forced perspective hand pinching a factory smokestack like a cigarette in gloomy liminal spaces.
Man pedaling a seaside exercise bike sculpture perched on a cliff above the water.

Cardio with a view of where you'd land.

My favorite weird places are the ones that are technically fine but spiritually unsupervised. Nothing bad is happening, which is somehow the worst part, because my brain keeps waiting for the bad thing to walk in and introduce itself. A highway rest stop floating in the middle of the ocean is a brilliant idea right up until I picture the vending machine humming at 2 AM with nobody around to hear it.

Then there are the weird photos that only turn creepy because of the caption. A castle on a foggy hill is just a nice castle until someone calls it their place for girls night, and suddenly I am worried about the girls. Most creepy places in my life have been office parks on a Sunday. I once sat in one for ten minutes, convinced I had slipped into the backup copy of reality, and I still check for it.

I think we pass these around for the same reason kids dare each other to touch the fence of the haunted house. It is a safe little scare. You look at a strange place that feels like a half-remembered dream, your stomach does a small flip, and then you are back on the couch with the lights on and snacks within reach. Lost, without leaving home.

Somewhere out there, that empty diner is still waiting for us to order.

When You Want Creepy Without A Jump Scare We’ve Got Creepy Liminal Spaces is the natural next stop if your neck is still tingling, and Weird Photos I Would Absolutely Airdrop To Unsuspecting Strangers can handle the rest of your evening. Bring a flashlight, just in case.
