Every October my neighbor Gary buys one more skeleton, and every October his wife asks where it’s going to go, and every October the answer is the roof. I love Gary. Gary figured out something the rest of us missed, which is that a plastic skeleton is the cheapest friend you’ll ever have and it will never ask you to help it move. Skeleton memes are basically a photo album of Garys, people who looked at a quiet lawn and thought, this needs a storyline.

What I love about halloween skeleton decorations is that nobody stops at one. You buy one, it looks lonely, you buy it a friend, and by the second weekend you’ve built an entire community with jobs, a committee, and what looks like union representation for the construction crew. I bought a single skeleton three years ago to sit on a bench. It now has a wife, a dog, and a fishing license, and I have stopped being invited to things.

The best funny halloween decorations aren’t scary at all, they’re aggressively normal. A skeleton on a video call that should have been an email, a few more playing board games on a weeknight, two of them at a spa getting more self-care than I’ve managed all year. There’s something about watching a dead guy calmly jump a car battery that makes you think, okay, maybe I can handle my own errands.

And then there’s the dark stuff, which is where the real artists live. Lawnmower accidents, pothole rescues, a little roadside disposal service that I hope is staged and am fairly sure is staged. These are the halloween memes that make you slow the car down, roll the window, and yell nice to a stranger, which is the closest a neighborhood ever gets to a standing ovation.

I think skeleton memes hit because they’re the most generous kind of Halloween. Nobody’s trying to scare toddlers here. They’re trying to make the mail carrier laugh, give the dog walker something to photograph, and win a contest that doesn’t exist against a neighbor who didn’t know they’d entered. I’ve slowed down for these in traffic, been honked at for it, and I would do it again tomorrow.

Underneath the puns, it’s grownups being playful in public, which we almost never get permission to do. Somebody spent a whole Saturday posing plastic bones in a bubble bath because it would make strangers happy, and it did. My own porch has one skeleton holding a coffee mug, and more people have waved at him this month than have waved at me all year. That’s an entire street saying hello without anybody having to actually talk to each other, which, for most of us, is the dream.

The bones are plastic. The puns are free. The neighbors are losing.

If your yard is looking a little underpopulated, our funny skeleton decorations gallery has plenty of ideas to steal, and the amazing Halloween decorations roundup will make you feel bad about your single pumpkin. We’ve also got dark Halloween memes, spooky season meme dumps, and 90s Halloween throwbacks for the weeks between now and the candy aisle. Go buy one more skeleton. It looks lonely.
