I have never once won an argument in the moment. I win it four days later, in the shower, out loud, to nobody. That’s why petty memes feel like a support group to me: these are people who skipped the shower part and went straight to a plan. Nobody got hurt, but everybody got inconvenienced, which is somehow worse. Grab a snack, because a few of these people are scarier than lawyers.

SaveThe best petty revenge takes a kind of patience I physically do not have. Burying smoke alarms in a client’s drywall and waiting a year? I can’t wait a year for a package. I forget my grudges halfway through having them, which is honestly the only reason I still get invited places. These people keep a calendar.
My favorite flavor is malicious compliance, where somebody follows the rules so perfectly that the rules start crying. The HOA wants the hoop attached to a garage, so it gets a very long rope. The bank won’t do small withdrawals, so a grandma turns the teller into a counting machine. Those are savage replies with a paper trail, and I respect anyone who can stay that calm while being that annoying.
Here’s what I think is going on. Most of us swallow a hundred tiny insults a week: the honk, the line cutter, the coworker who hits reply all. Petty is what happens when one person finally says not today, and answers with a hotel alarm clock instead of a fist. It’s justice at the size of a sticky note, which is the only size I can afford.
The alarm is set. The receipt is kept. The grudge is fed.
I went straight back to 32 Petty Memes That Turned Minor Grudges Into Art after this one, then fell into 22 Revenge Stories So Satisfying You’ll Feel Second-Hand Justice, which reads like a training manual with better manners. Read both, take notes, and please leave the hotel clocks alone.
