Russian Bot Memes After Ukraine Hit Yandex and the Replies Felt Quieter

Sometime over the weekend, a lot of people opened their phones, scrolled down to the replies and found nobody yelling at them. Ukrainian drones had just hit three Yandex data centers in Russia in four days, and the Russian bot memes arrived with a theory already attached: the angriest accounts online were running on those servers, and the servers were on fire.

Russian Bots Gone Quiet?

Here’s the part that actually happened. According to Al Jazeera’s report on Ukraine’s strikes on Russia’s AI data infrastructure, drones shut down the Sasovo site on Oct. 8 and hit Kaluga the next day, and Yandex later said operations at a third site in Vladimir were completely suspended. Cloudflare data showed automated traffic from Yandex’s network down about 94%, and Zelensky said it suddenly became “a little easier to breathe on many social media platforms.”

I want this to be true so badly that I don’t trust myself. Euronews dug into whether the Yandex strikes cut Russian bot activity and pointed out that the drop includes ordinary search engine crawlers, so nobody has proven the trolls logged off. That has slowed down exactly no one, and a few of the breaking news graphics going around were made up for the bit, which feels right for a story about fake accounts.

Where Did She Go?

The romance branch is my favorite, because it is the saddest. A lot of men are apparently about to learn that the long-distance girlfriend who loved their opinions on interest rates was a server rack. I’m not laughing at these guys. I had a pen pal in seventh grade who stopped writing back, and I still wonder what I said.

Elon Checks His Likes

Then the jokes found Elon Musk. Screenshots of a Musk post reading “Zelensky has gone too far” circulated next to the strike news, and people decided it was a man mourning his audience. YouTuber Zack Nelson, of JerryRigEverything, posted a Musk reply sitting at 4,900 likes and called it a post-bot-farm slump, while Ben Collins asked about the fate of the 40,000 Sexy Ladies For Ken Paxton accounts.

To be clear, nobody has shown that bots were propping up anybody’s numbers. Also, 4,900 likes on a one-word reply is more than I have gotten on anything, including my engagement announcement.

Droids and Clouds

The nerds, as always, had the cleanest reference ready. Somebody remembered the battle droids in The Phantom Menace dropping the second their control ship went down, posted it with no context at all, and let everyone do the math. The cloud joke is a pun I am furious I did not think of first.

Enjoy the quiet while it lasts. Yandex says it is working on repairs, which means somewhere a server rack is about to reboot, find a lonely guy in Ohio and ask him how his day was. He is going to tell it everything.
