Every October my partner and I have the same fight, and it is never about money: it is about who has to be the object. Because that is the secret of funny halloween couples costumes: one person gets to be a recognizable human, and the other spends six hours as a condiment, a painting, or a large worm. I have been the worm. I could not sit down or hold a drink, and I have never been more popular at a party. The couples below worked it out, and you can tell exactly who won.

Date night, but with a business plan.

She asked for an emperor. He heard "creamy."

He went the distance. To the porch.

A happy little hostage.

One of them can't see, sit, or drink. Guess which.

The only costume that makes the whole party hungry.

The power dynamic was always canon.

The key is commitment.

That orange tracksuit has a plan.

The face of a man who agreed to this in August.

Free cookies. Small catch.

The pose took one take. The hat took a week.

She brought the bat. He brought the door.

Evil has never looked this hydrated.

After the park closes.

Retirement goals, honestly.

Just two locals commuting.

Roommates.

Far Far Away, and absolutely nailing it.

He who must not be paused.

He's been practicing that scowl since 1999.

First rule: tell everyone about the costume.

Two entries in one gallery. So much for the first rule.

I respect any pair who looked at a list of couples costume ideas and went straight past the famous lovers to the pun. Being half of a historical romance is easy. Being a packet of salad dressing standing beside a queen of Egypt takes a level of security in the relationship that I have personally never reached. The pun costume says we have been together long enough that neither of us needs to look good.
Then there are the diy couples costumes, which I love because you can practically smell the hot glue. Somebody spent a weekend turning a laundry hamper into a desert monster, and somebody else stood in the living room saying it needed more teeth. I once built a costume out of a refrigerator box and learned at the party that I could not fit through the door. Nobody tells you that cardboard is a commitment.
My real weakness is movie couples costumes where the duo was never a couple at all: two chemistry coworkers, a wizard and his sworn enemy sharing a couch, a superhero and sidekick who have clearly been retired since before I was born. It turns out romance is optional. What you need is one other person willing to look ridiculous at the exact same time as you, in public, for free.
Here is what a shared costume really is: a group project where you also have to go home with your partner. You pick the idea together, one of you does most of the work, and the other one shows up at seven asking where their wig is. I have been both people. I was worse as the second one. And still it works, because a costume that needs two bodies to make sense is a small public announcement that somebody agreed to your nonsense.
That is the part that gets me. Anybody can buy a cape. It takes real affection to spend an evening explaining to strangers that you are the kite, and that the other half of the joke is over by the snacks. Stand apart and you are two confusing adults; stand together and the whole room gets it. I think that might be the nicest thing a costume can do, and I say that as a man who was once a very lonely piece of toast.
The wig is itchy. The bit is working. Nobody sits down.
If you still have not picked a costume, we have a whole pile of creative Halloween costumes to steal from, plus last year’s couples Halloween costumes for anyone who needs a second opinion before the argument starts. Once the outfit is settled, the Halloween memes are waiting, right next to the relationship memes and the dog costume galleries, which are honestly better than anything a person has ever worn. Go on. The glue gun is already warm.
