I take forty shots to get one where my face looks like a face, and I still never check the background. That is the whole problem with perfectly timed photos. Everyone up front is trying their best, and somebody in the back is quietly ruining it, or saving it, depending on your sense of humor. Sometimes it is a wild animal, sometimes a celebrity, so look past the smiling people.

The funny photobombs that get me every time come from animals, and none of them know it. A couple shares a romantic moment in a lake and the dog looks like it just witnessed a crime. A wedding portrait gets ambushed by a raccoon family that clearly heard there was an open bar. Animal photobombs work because the animal has no idea it is ruining anything, which is also how I attend parties.
People, on the other hand, know exactly what they are doing. The best photobombs come from someone who spotted a camera and made a choice, like a movie star casually crashing a stranger’s wedding or a guy pouting in the back like he got left out of the group chat. Funny wedding photos are my favorite, because the stakes are so high and somebody always wrecks it anyway. I would be the guy in the back, and honestly, I have been.
The photo fails in here are secretly better than the photos people meant to take. Nobody remembers the posed smile; everybody remembers the stingray grinning between two tourists. The background is where real life sneaks in, uninvited and right on time. Maybe that is the lesson: relax your face, because the raccoons are coming either way.
Somewhere right now, a dog is lining up its next masterpiece.
Still zooming in on every background? 31 Perfectly Timed Photos That Caught Chaos At The Exact Right Second covers the split-second side of things, and 35 Funny Animal Photobombs That Stole The Shot has plenty more uninvited guests. Check your own camera roll afterward. Somebody is back there.
