Nobody Plans to Become a Sculpture, but Passed Out Drunk Photos Show How Fast It Happens

There is one law at every party that is older than the keg itself: whoever falls asleep first becomes public property. Passed out drunk photos are the evidence locker for that law, a museum of people who closed their eyes for one second and woke up as a beer can totem pole. I know this because I have been the totem pole. Twice. And I am not even mad, because the engineering was gorgeous both times, so let’s tour the hall of fame.

What gets me is the craftsmanship. Nobody at a party will help you carry a couch, but the second you doze off, everybody becomes a structural engineer with a degree in stacking cans. Good party pranks require patience, a steady hand, and total silence, which are three things nobody in that room had five minutes earlier. I have watched grown men who cannot parallel park balance a tower of empties on a forehead like they were defusing a bomb.

My favorite people in here did not need any help at all, because they picked their own final resting place. A pet door. A subway coat hook. A bathtub, which I respect, since at least you are near water. These are the purest drunk fails, and I say that as a man who once fell asleep standing up in a hotel elevator and rode it for forty minutes, so I am not here to judge anybody’s choices, just to rate the landing.

Then the animals show up and the drunk memes somehow get better. A cat cradling a beer bottle like a newborn is a cat with a past. A cat slumped against the wall with a pile of cans looks like he is about to tell you about his ex. I do not know who keeps setting up these little feline benders, but I need them to stop, and I also need them to keep sending photos.

Here is what I have figured out after a lot of research, most of it involuntary. Passed out drunk photos are not really about the person sleeping. They are about the friends standing over them at two in the morning, giggling, whispering, trying not to knock over the eighth can. It is the most focused a group of drunk people will ever be, and it is all in service of one dumb, beautiful goal.

And underneath the prank, there is something kind of sweet. You only get decorated by people who stuck around. Strangers leave you on the lawn, but friends drape a newspaper over you, prop your head up, and make sure somebody has eyes on you before the photo shoot begins. That is love in a weird, can-shaped way, so drink some water, pick your crew carefully, and try not to be the first one down.

Sit down once. Wake up decorated. Never live it down.

If you are still in the mood for questionable decisions, we have a whole cellar of them. The drunk fails pictures will make your last hangover look graceful, the booze hacks are packed with party survival tips nobody should trust, and our drunk memes archive is basically a group chat at closing time. Hydrate first, then scroll. Your friends are probably holding a can over your head right now.
