The CJ Stroud McNuggets meme started with this Texans ad of Stroud throwing a giant chicken nugget like a football.

I’ll admit my first reaction to the CJ Stroud McNuggets meme was hunger, and my second was concern for the man. On Monday the Houston Texans promoted a McDonald’s deal, six free McNuggets for Houston-area fans the day after a Texans touchdown pass, using a photo of Stroud mid-throw with the football swapped for one enormous nugget.

The timing did the rest. Houston is 0-4 after Sunday’s 34-30 loss to the Cowboys, so fans read the graphic less as a coupon and more as the team saying something out loud.

Slandering Your Own QB

The loudest branch treated the ad like a betrayal. NFL Memes called it “absolutely diabolical,” one fan said it was the worst PR they had ever seen for a starting quarterback, and another asked, in capital letters, why anyone would do this to him.

I keep picturing the meeting. Somebody said “nugget football,” nobody said “wait,” and now a grown man’s throwing arm is holding lunch in front of the whole league. I’ve approved worse ideas at home, but nobody posted mine.

They Want CJ to Fail

The second branch went full conspiracy. Replies under the Texans’ post accused the team of setting Stroud up on purpose, and a lot of people decided the graphic was a cry for help dressed as a promotion.

In fairness to Stroud, the numbers are on his side. He threw for 347 yards and two touchdowns without a pick against Dallas, and through four games he has five touchdown passes and zero interceptions, so on paper the nuggets should be flowing.

Stroud Memes Got Edited

The photoshop crowd showed up next, and that’s where the CJ Stroud McNuggets meme turned into a full menu. One edit put him behind the counter in a McDonald’s uniform, a meme page reposted the ad with a headline that did all the work, and one guy swapped the nugget for a meatball sub and captioned it “Fixed it.”

A Reddit commenter found the only bright side: if he throws it like a Hail Mary, the fans in the cheap seats will be eating well.

Here’s my prediction. Stroud throws three touchdowns next week, Houston eats free for a day, and the Texans’ social team quietly goes back to using a regular football and hopes we forget. We won’t forget. I already saved the picture to show my kids.
