Goodbye cakes classic: a sheet cake piped with error, employee quit unexpectedly, next to a big red frosting apple

When I left my first real job, my coworkers got me a cake that said Good Luck, and I spent a week wondering what they knew. That is the power of goodbye cakes. Nobody in an office is allowed to say what they really think, except in buttercream, where apparently everything is legal. Somebody walks into a bakery, orders a sheet cake with roses, and asks for the word quitter in the nicest cursive available. I respect that, so let’s look at the damage.

My favorite kind is the cake that pretends to hate you. A farewell cake that says go away with a frowny face is, I would argue, the most loving thing an office can produce. You don’t bake a grudge. You bake because you are going to miss somebody and you would rather eat frosting than admit it out loud.

Then there are the coworkers who clearly spent their entire lunch break on a project. Someone piped a working supply and demand curve for a guy named John. Someone else wrote actual code across a sheet cake, which means a person in that office knew how to use both a piping bag and a semicolon, and I find that threatening. Funny cakes like these are really just inside jokes with a sugar budget.

The ones I relate to most are the cakes that give up halfway through remembering you. There is one that basically asks the departing coworker for their name, and I felt that in my bones, because I once signed a farewell card for someone I was fairly sure was a vendor. Work memes have been saying for years that nobody at the office really knows anybody. These cakes just confirmed it with sprinkles.

Here is my theory about why these exist. An office is a room full of adults pretending to be professional for eight hours a day, and a goodbye is the one moment the pretending gets a break. So people grab the most wholesome object in the building, a grocery store sheet cake, and write the least wholesome sentence they can think of on it. It is the only time the whole team agrees on anything.

And I think that’s sweet, in a way that would be hard to explain to HR. You don’t roast someone you didn’t like; you just sign the card and leave early. When a whole department chips in for a cake that says traitor, what they are really saying is that the lunch table will be quieter now, and they are mad about it. I once cried at a goodbye party for a guy whose last name I never learned, so I am in no position to judge.

The job is over. The frosting said it all. The cake still got eaten.

If you are still hungry, our funny cakes collection is full of bakers who went wildly off script, and the cake fails archive has frosting that should be under investigation. Anyone planning a dramatic exit should study the quitting job memes first, then unwind with a few work memes before Monday finds you. Take a slice for the road. You earned it, allegedly.
