I once fell asleep on the subway holding a rotisserie chicken and woke up at the last stop with half a chicken, so I am in no position to judge anybody. That is exactly why I love a fresh batch of subway weirdos. Every person in here got on a train looking like this on purpose, and honestly, respect. With Halloween coming, it is the one month a year they blend in.

Costume people on the subway are the bravest riders in America. A guy duct-taped head to toe in bananas is not commuting, he is making a statement, and the statement is that nobody will sit next to him. I have dressed completely normal and still had nobody sit next to me, so who is really winning? Subway fashion stays undefeated.

The animal riders scare me more than the costumes. A raccoon swinging on the handrail, a hawk perched on a hoodie, a python wearing a guy like a scarf: that is a petting zoo with a fare. The crazy people on the subway carrying a propeller or chopping onions in their lap are the ones who make me check my own sanity, mostly because I have eaten a full burrito standing up on the 6 train.

Here is the thing about the subway: everybody down there is having the most important day of their life, and nobody cares. That is freedom. You can be a wizard, a chicken or a guy pushing a robot in a stroller, and the train still shows up late for all of you equally. Public transit memes exist because it is the last place we are all stuck together.

The doors are closing. The raccoon has a seat. Stand clear.

35 Animals On Public Transport That Made Commuting Magic is the next stop if the raccoon won you over, and 47 People Of Walmart Who Are Living Their Best Weird Lives proves the weirdness does not end at the turnstile. Mind the gap on your way over.
