I went into this gallery expecting some rusty swings and maybe a wobbly slide, the usual. What I found instead was a collection of structures so cursed I had to put my tea down. These worst playgrounds passed through actual approval processes, with actual adults signing actual forms, and every single one of those adults has questions to answer. There are elephants involved. You know how. Let’s get through this together, loves.

"Hey kids, go play on the giant… banana."

Right in the donut hole.

Enter the Spider-Verse, they said. It'll be fun, they said.

I'm no zoologist, but I don't think that's how elephants work.

Right, the anatomical disasters first, because we need to address them and then never speak of them again. There’s a Spiderman bouncy castle where the entrance placement forces children to enter the Spider-Verse in a way absolutely nobody at Marvel signed off on, and my Spidey senses have been tingling with dread ever since. The giant Pikachu inflatable made the same catastrophic design choice, and all I can say is Pikachu, I choose to walk away immediately. And the giant gorilla with two slides protruding directly from its chest is a structure I have so many questions about and want precisely zero answers to. Somewhere there’s a blueprint. Somewhere there’s a meeting where this was PITCHED. I think about that meeting constantly.
Now, the elephant situation, and I’m sorry, but multiple designers, in different places, independently looked at the majestic elephant and unanimously agreed its rear end was the ideal exit point for children. There is photographic evidence of a small child emerging from exactly where you fear, and of families gathered near a red slide protruding from the same architectural decision, presumably fielding the question every parent dreads: “Mummy, where do children come from?” Well, sweetheart, according to this municipality, from there. At least it’s educational. In the worst possible way. The elephant in the room is the elephant.
And then there’s the pure nightmare fuel category, which skips inappropriate and goes straight to psychologically formative. A tunnel entrance shaped like a gaping screaming face, positioned so children must be fed into the mouth to play, an experience I can only describe as “traumatize your kids right before lunchtime.” A giant menacing clown structure combining coulrophobia with, yes, another crotch slide, because apparently that was the design language of an entire era. Even the banana tube slide, which sounds innocent, was rendered with choices, and the designer knew, everyone involved knew, and it got built anyway. And the wooden slide with the near-vertical drop-off isn’t creepy, just violent, an Intro to Gravity express lane that dentists presumably sponsored. Different flavor of terrible. Same approval committee, I’d wager.
Here’s what I keep coming back to, and it’s the paperwork. Every one of these had a designer, a budget, a planning meeting, an installation crew, and a ribbon-cutting, and at no stage in that entire pipeline did one person stand up and say “hang on, look at where the slide comes out.” Not one. That’s not a design failure, that’s a group effort, and honestly, the teamwork required to get a clown crotch slide past a city council almost impresses me. Almost.
And yet, and I can’t believe I’m saying this, the kids were probably fine, weren’t they. Children have no idea the elephant slide is cursed. They just see a slide. The horror is entirely ours, the adults, standing at the fence doing slow architectural double-takes while our children joyfully exit an elephant. Maybe that’s the real design lesson: the playground was never for us. Though I’d still like a word with the clown people. A brief word. Bring the blueprints.
The slide exits where it exits. The clown remains. Supervise everything.
If your inner child is also demanding compensation, our design disaster content will validate the claim, with playground fail archives, architecture blunder threads, and who-approved-this compilations documented in full. View them all. Then hug a normal swing set. It’s earned it.
