Awkward Family Christmas Photos That Should’ve Stayed In The Drawer
Updated on December 12, 2025
I was trying to hunt down one nice picture for a Christmas card and instead tripped over a folder of awkward family Christmas photos so chaotic I had to sit down.
Within three swipes I’d seen a man in a speedo under a tree, a dad wielding a plunger like Excalibur, and at least two hot tubs that should never have met tinsel.
This is why we don’t let grandparents near the disposable cameras anymore.
35 Awkward Family Christmas Photos For Maximum Secondhand Cringe

Once you’ve seen the full lineup of awkward family Christmas photos, you start to understand why some funny Christmas pictures never made it to the fridge.
There’s the swimsuit medal family posing like they’re at the Olympics of Seasonal Confusion, the hot tub crew trying to sell “wholesome family time” while looking like a retro spa ad, and dad proudly presenting a plunger next to the tree like it’s the real star of the show.
Somewhere, a kid is still emotionally processing that.
Then the props get weirder.
A grown man in a diaper posing next to an actual baby.
A staged “serve dad for dinner” shot where his head appears on a platter.
A pyramid of relatives in matching black sweaters stacked like a human Christmas tree.
These awkward family photos feel like everyone said, “What if we made the holiday card slightly haunted this year?” You can practically smell the cigarette smoke in that shot where the whole family is proudly puffing away in front of the stockings.
Pair it with the bruised Santa trying to smile through what looks like a North Pole bar fight, and the vibe is less “peace on earth” and more “somebody call HR.”
Awkward family Christmas photos really are time capsules for questionable decisions.
And then there’s the zero-boundaries crew.
Couples and kids licking each other’s faces like that’s a normal pose to mail to coworkers.
Hot tub wine photos that read more “grown-up party flyer” than “holiday greetings from the Johnsons.”
These Christmas card photos are the reason many of us quietly went with a picture of the dog and called it a day.
The magic of galleries like this is realizing your own weird little crew maybe wasn’t that bad after all.
Katie Rodriguez files these disasters next to school picture day in the “we did our best, I guess” section of her brain.
