Confession: I was the kid who treated the Scholastic Book Fair like Black Friday, so the Skyler Gisondo memes hit me like a hall pass back to 2006. If you are wondering what the meme means, it is simple. People take a grinning red-carpet photo of the actor from the 2015 Vacation premiere and caption it with one oddly specific thing a kid from your elementary school definitely did. This fall’s wave took off on September 30, when @BYUsupersoaker posted the one about recess.

That recess tweet is the template. Every caption describes a kid who was a little too much in the best possible way, and the freckles and the grin sell it completely. Every school had a dodgeball stuck in the gym ceiling, and every one of those balls came with a legend. By October 2, @dicktective had moved the investigation to the ICEE stage, and the recess memes only got more specific from there.

Why Do Skyler Gisondo Memes Feel Like a Class Photo?
Because the captions are not insults, they are character sheets. Somebody reads ten books for a personal pan pizza, somebody masters cup stacking for exactly one school year, somebody’s braces glow at the roller rink. I did that pizza reading program with the intensity of a bar exam and can still taste the victory pepperoni, so I am in no position to judge.

The early internet branch is just as precise. Running a blog for a pet gerbil and nominating 99 people for the ice bucket challenge are both acts of pure, unsupervised enthusiasm, and even the official Tumblr account showed up to file a report.

Didn’t Everyone Have a Hotel Pool Best Friend?

This is the branch that broke me. The hotel pool friend was your soulmate from 10 a.m. until checkout, then vanished forever, and @marygracepurser fit that whole heartbreak into one sentence. The vacation memes keep rolling from there: the Disney cruise crush, the Great Wolf Lodge veteran, and the tour guide who walks backwards like it is an Olympic event.

Then he grows up, gets a job, and somehow it still works. Of course he is checking on your breadsticks. Of course somebody wants him cast as Willy Wonka.

Who Requested the Cotton Eye Joe?
The high school chapter is pure dance floor menace. He knows every step of the Cupid Shuffle, he got Cotton Eye Joe played at homecoming, and he asks your date if this guy is bothering you, as a bit, every single time. My homecoming had three of him and a DJ who gave up by 9:30.

What Happened to the Kid With the Dog?

A second photo joined the rotation this month: Gisondo outdoors, holding a deeply relaxed dog and gazing into the distance like the crops just failed. The captions immediately left elementary school for the Dust Bowl, and I respect the pivot.

Gisondo has been in on the joke for years. Back in 2022 he reposted the original trampoline tweet and wrote that he was “just feeling really seen right now,” and he has since made the meme photo his Instagram profile picture. On October 7, according to USA Today’s report on Gisondo’s response, he shared his “favorite one from the new batch” on his Instagram Story, and it was this one.

The memes have picked up this year alongside his role in Primetime, and it is sweet to watch a guy get typecast as everyone’s favorite classmate and love it. Everybody knew a kid who was too excited about everything. Plenty of us were that kid, and it is nice to see the internet decide he turned out great.
