I have screamed at someone I love over a play call. It was my brother-in-law, it was Thanksgiving touch football, and I haven’t been invited back. So I understood the Steelers’ opening drive Thursday night completely: Aaron Rodgers yelled at the sideline for a play, the cameras cut to Mike McCarthy, and McCarthy appeared to fire back with a two-word insult I can’t type here. Aaron Rodgers Mike McCarthy memes were up before the drive was even over.

The Whole Fight Took About Four Seconds
Here’s the plain version. Early in the first quarter, Rodgers got tired of waiting for the call and let McCarthy hear about it. The broadcast cut over just in time to catch McCarthy’s answer, which nobody could hear but everybody could read. The drive ended in a touchdown anyway, which is the most married thing about it.
After the Steelers-Browns score went final at 27-24 on Thursday Night Football, McCarthy owned it, and Mike McCarthy’s apology for the exchange was basically the sound of a man promising to do better in front of the in-laws. He said he wished he wouldn’t use those words. Rodgers blamed the crowd, saying it was loud and some of the calls were hard to hear.

The Rodgers McCarthy Marriage Started in 2006
The joke landed so fast because these two spent 13 seasons together in Green Bay and won a Super Bowl, against Pittsburgh of all teams. Now McCarthy coaches the Steelers and Rodgers is his quarterback again, and the old married couple bit wrote itself in real time.

Daniel Jeremiah’s Al Bundy line showed up in my feed twice, which honestly is perfect for a sitcom rerun. Robert Griffin III went with divorced but still living together, and I can’t do better than that. I’m not going to try.

Everybody Is a Lip Reader Now
There was no audio of McCarthy, so America did what it does with any good hot mic moment: it squinted. Within minutes, half the replies were self-appointed lip readers, all landing on the same two words and all pretending to be shocked about it.

Reddit went straight to the hall of fame debate, which I fully support. Every league needs a hot mic Mount Rushmore, and this one is getting a face on it.

Rodgers Is Having a Long Year
The rest of the jokes went after Rodgers, gently and not so gently. He came back for one more season, he’s back with the coach he left, and he spent Thursday night making faces at the sideline like a guy whose pizza order got messed up again. I make that face at my own fridge.

And then there’s the Reddit thread, where somebody pointed out that bringing McCarthy back just to yell at him is pretty funny, and the next person agreed in four words.

Twenty years, one ring, and they still talk to each other like two guys assembling a grill.
I’ll admit I went back and read 17 Aaron Rodgers Memes To Get Hyped For The NFL Season just to remember when everyone was this optimistic. When that wears off, Look At These 40 NFL Memes Instead Of Crying About Your Parlay is the cheaper therapy.
