Sen. Amy Klobuchar, who pointed out that she knows her Midwestern sports, then ran the fact-check live: Iowa beat Maryland 93 to 85 on Feb. 3, 2024, and Clark scored over 30. The texts on the board never named a team or a game at all. While all of that was happening, a network camera started a slow push in on Britt, and the clip spread across X within hours. @thepondering_ posted the zoom with an LMAO that had at least four extra O’s in it, and Mike Nellis called her look of horror incredible, which might be the only thing everyone in Washington agreed on this week.
The replies turned into a vocabulary contest. Aghast showed up, and so did perplexed and befuddled. My favorite reading is the simplest one: she looks exactly like a person who just watched a coworker hit reply-all on the email that was supposed to go to one guy.

By Tuesday night the face had stopped being about the Senate at all. It became a coworker reaction meme, the look you shoot across the conference table when somebody’s slideshow starts quoting the wrong quarter. Casual Thursday put it at a wedding, aimed at a husband heading for the DJ booth after his fifth beer, and I felt that one in my chest because I have been that husband.
Other people skipped Britt and went straight to the reaction GIF vault: a suspicious beagle standing in for Smith, a courtroom audience member losing it, and a grinning guy on a phone call in the desert that the caption assigns to Schmitt.
The Pundits Pile On
Then the reporters and political types showed up, and they were having the most fun of anyone. Matt Fuller noted that Britt is a former congressional staffer herself, which makes her face less of a reaction and more of a professional assessment. Nate Silver brought up Matlock. And Four Seasons Total Landscaping, the Philadelphia business famous for a 2020 press conference in its parking lot, logged on to rank this above anything it has seen.
The timing jokes hit hardest. Emily Zanotti spotted a triumphant post about Smith getting caught that went up before the whole thing unraveled, which is the political version of popping champagne in the seventh inning. Everyone else just kept adding adjectives.
The Morning After
By Wednesday, Schmitt was defending the exchange, telling reporters his job is to ask questions. Fair enough. The follow-up question for next time is which Hawks.
I think the face traveled this far because nobody watching it felt superior. Everybody has sat next to someone while a plan went sideways, known it in real time, been powerless to fix it, and tried very hard to keep a straight face. Britt just happened to lose that fight in high definition, and she did it for all of us.
