No arguments. No complicated discourse. Humanity learned there was another kind of kitty and immediately began hammering the “PROTECT AT ALL COSTS” button.
And this really is a significant scientific discovery. The tilcayo is the first living feline species formally described by science in more than a century. It weighs only around three pounds, measures about 18 inches from head to body and belongs to the South American tiger-cat group. National Geographic introduced the animal on September 17 after years of research into what initially arrived at a Bolivian wildlife sanctuary as, essentially, “some weird cat.”
Science has named it Leopardus tilcayo.
The internet has named it New Cat.
New Cat Dropped Memes Treated Biology Like A Game Update
The phrase took off almost immediately.
An X user responding to National Geographic simply announced “NEW CAT DROPPED,” pulling roughly 7.7 million views and 245,000 likes in about four days. The obvious joke was that scientists hadn’t classified an animal; the developers of Earth had finally pushed new content.
Naturally, somebody brought GTA 6 into it.

The scientific story is a little more complicated than somebody walking into the forest and finding a previously unopened cat box. Researchers analyzed DNA from 38 tiger cats and concluded that animals previously grouped together actually represent five genetically distinct species. Reuters reports that the tilcayo lineage diverged from relatives around 1.4 million years ago.
But “phylogenomics revealed a distinct evolutionary lineage” has considerably less meme potential than NEW KITTY JUST DROPPED.
It Took About One Day For The Fan Art To Arrive
Possibly the most important measurement of internet acceptance is how quickly strangers begin drawing the animal.
The answer here was: almost immediately.
The original tilcayo artwork spreading by September 18, one day after the National Geographic announcement.
That means scientists spent years doing fieldwork, genetic analysis and taxonomic research, and the internet spent roughly 24 hours deciding the animal needed stars, cute illustrations and eventually celebrity treatment.
Why it matters: most science news asks people to care about something abstract. This one arrived as a three-pound spotted cat with an annoyed little face. Conservation messaging rarely gets an easier opening act.
Every Human Immediately Wanted To Pspsps The Wild Animal
Then came the completely predictable phase where everyone forgot the word “wild.”
This animal lives in a mountainous cloud forest.
It is not somebody’s tabby.
None of that is powerful enough to defeat the ancient human instinct of crouching down, extending one finger and going “pspspspspsps.”
The Reddit reaction pool quickly filled with “friend shaped,” “I must pet the cat,” and variations of people volunteering to travel directly into Bolivia’s Yungas to make an extremely inadvisable new acquaintance.
The tilcayo is smaller than an average house cat, which is incredibly dangerous information to give the public because “small” is apparently interpreted as “I can pick that up.”
Domestic Cats Have Been Put On Notice
One meme wisely protects an existing household cat from seeing the new model.
You do not need that kind of jealousy under your roof.
Imagine spending ten years being told you are the most beautiful little creature in the world and then your owner opens their phone and gasps because science just released Cat 2.
“New Cat Unlocked” really does summarize the mood better than any headline could.
And because the internet cannot leave anything wholesome alone without making it slightly stranger, the fan-art phase has already progressed into retro comics and press-conference celebrity cat imagery.
That may be the best part of the whole New cat dropped memes wave. A serious piece of taxonomic research introduced the world to a genuinely remarkable animal, and rather than turning it into another exhausting online argument, millions of people agreed on the important part:
