I once spent twenty minutes looking at a photo of a parking lot before I realized it was a photo of a parking lot. That’s the feeling wait what memes give me, only faster and with more cats. You look, you nod, you keep scrolling, and then your thumb stops on its own, like it saw something your eyes missed. I’ve learned to trust my thumb. It’s the smartest part of me, and it has never once paid rent.

I like it when an object turns out to be about itself. A lighter with a picture of a lighter on it. A slice of pizza covered in smaller slices of pizza, for five dollars. I bought a mirror once and it came with a photo of the mirror, and I’ve been staring at both ever since. These funny pictures are the kind that make you wonder whether the universe is running low on ideas.

Then there are people who solved a problem in a way nobody will ever solve it again. A purse with holes cut out to hold a dog still. A tiny cocktail umbrella protecting live wiring from the rain. A man mowing his lawn on a self balancing scooter, looking more relaxed than anyone has ever looked doing yard work. Weird photos like these prove that necessity is the mother of invention, and confusion is the father, and they don’t talk.

And a few of them are just your eyes lying to you. A thumb lines up perfectly with a statue’s missing nose. A cat sits beside a suitcase printed with its own face, wearing the same expression, like it’s being cross examined. I looked at a mannequin with a dad belly for a long time and decided it was the most honest mannequin I’d ever met. Random memes like these make your brain stand up and stretch.

I think we love these because the world is mostly predictable, and that gets heavy after a while. You wake up, you make coffee, and the coffee is coffee. Then one day a photo shows you a coffee screaming back at you, and for a second the rules loosen up a little. It’s not a big moment, but it’s a nice one, like finding a dollar in a coat you forgot you owned.

Sharing them is a little like pointing at the sky so someone else looks up. You don’t need to explain anything. You just want company in the confusion. I sent one of these to my brother and he replied with a question mark, so I replied with a question mark, and that’s the closest we’ve been in years.

Look once. Look again. Still don’t get it.

If your brain wants another workout, our hold up memes and wait what moments are a solid next stop, and the inanimate objects with faces collection will make your kitchen feel watched. We’ve also got pics that need a double take, random meme dumps, and plenty of funny pictures that can’t decide if they’re cute or cursed. Take your time with them. Some take a while to arrive.

We don't have any information about the author, but from what we can tell, they are an enigma!
