Rent is insane, eggs cost like a car payment, and yet somewhere in this country a genuinely gifted person is spending three weekends building something nobody asked for. I find that inspiring, frankly. Awful taste but great execution is the last honest art movement we have, because nobody sane is doing it for the money. I once turned a perfectly good coffee table into a pirate chest, so I come to these masterpieces as a peer.

Flask styled like an original PlayStation reading Drink Station, awful taste but great execution.

Press start to regret.

Renaissance style portrait of a chubby boy clutching Pringles and a bag of Lay's.
Muffins topped with cutout South Park figures of Randy Marsh on chocolate sticks.
Pants stitched together from pink and white ski masks with the eye holes intact.

Ready to rob a bank from the waist down.

Woman's bob haircut dyed green, red and black to look like Boba Fett's helmet.
Fingernails painted to match colored Guitar Hero fret buttons, awful taste but great execution.
Bedspread quilted from purple Crown Royal bags, listed on Marketplace for $250.
Tailgate mural honoring Akira Toriyama with Goku and Vegeta, awful taste but great execution.
Red lobster claw door handle mounted on a white door with keys hanging below.

Pinch to enter.

Tiny charcuterie board earrings with cheese and fruit, awful taste but great execution jewelry.
White shirt with embroidered Van Gogh portraits and ear shaped buttons beside them.

Finally, a shirt that listens.

Long acrylic nails painted to look like lit cigarettes with orange filters.

Gold ring engraved with a press conference scene featuring a thrown shoe.
Electric guitar body covered in Pokemon cards, including a holographic Charizard.

Six hundred dollars and it still waddles.

Some assembly required. Some therapy too.

Oil painting of Freddie Mercury with the face of a chihuahua.

Bohemian Chihuahuasody.

Painting of a man in a power wheelchair next to a firework bursting on the pavement.
Brown leather dress shoes airbrushed so the toes appear to show through.
Thrift store sweatpants printed with Nicolas Cage's face, awful taste but great execution.

Now I can't unsee the seam.

What gets me is the commitment to actually wearing it. Somebody sat in a tattoo chair and chose the back of their own skull as a billboard, and somebody else stitched ski masks into pants so their knees could rob a bank. That’s not ugly fashion, that’s a lifestyle with a waiver. I respect it the way I respect skydivers: from the ground, with snacks.

Then there are the weird products for the home, which is where the real madness lives. A watermelon table with duck feet costs more than my first car, and the teeth mug belongs in a folder of cursed images, yet the glaze work is immaculate. Every one of these was sanded, painted and sealed with more care than anything I’ve finished in my life. That’s the part that keeps me up at night.

Maybe that’s why we can’t stop sharing these. Everybody has one terrible idea they’d build if they had the skills, and these people actually did it, with no shame, no focus group and not one friend brave enough to stop them. That’s not bad taste, that’s freedom, and it’s gorgeous in the worst possible way.

Taste is temporary, but a perfectly glazed teeth mug is forever.

If you still have room for questionable decisions, 32 Cursed Cars That Prove DIY Is Not Always A Good Call has the same energy on four wheels, and The Worst Thrift Store Finds Prove That One Man’s Trash Is Another Man’s Cursed Heirloom is basically this gallery’s family reunion. Bring snacks and lower expectations.
