Worst staircases

You know, I consider myself a pretty agile guy. I can move when there is a buffet involved. But these stairs? These are death traps! I am looking at that carpeted staircase and I am already falling. My knees are buckling just looking at the photo. Who puts geometric patterns on steps? You can’t see the edge! You take one step and suddenly you are tumbling into the living room like a human bowling ball.

And the alternating tread stairs? What is this, American Ninja Warrior? I just want to go to bed! I don’t want to solve a puzzle with my feet! If I have to think about which foot goes where, I am sleeping on the couch. It is not worth the risk. Architects are trying to kill us, folks. They are designing obstacle courses and calling it modern art.

Stairs have one job: to get you from one floor to another safely. These architects missed the memo. We have gathered the most dangerous, confusing, and poorly designed staircases that make taking the elevator look like the only option.

Extremely long and steep narrow staircase leading upwards endlessly.
Stairs covered in geometric patterned blue carpet hiding step edges.
Steep wooden alternating tread staircase resembling a ladder.
Indoor staircase covered in large decorative rocks creating tripping hazard.
Steep metal alternating tread stairs looking like stacked boxes.
Black and white checkerboard tile stairs creating optical illusion.
Dizzying square stairwell with teal railings descending into darkness.
Wooden stairs with dangerous wavy scalloped edges on each step.
Highly polished wooden stairs with blending grain hiding step edges.

The stairs covered in rocks are a personal attack. Why would you put trip hazards on the trip hazard? It makes no sense. And the endless narrow staircase looks like something out of a horror movie. If you have to climb that every day, you don’t need a gym membership; you need a life insurance policy.

If you prefer keeping your feet on flat ground, check out more design disasters. Look up architecture fails, interior design cringe, and dangerous home photos for more structural nightmares.
