I bought a house in the 90s on an office junior’s salary. On my own. Money was a bit tight but I still smoked and had a good drink now and again. Now I see younger people unable to afford basic rents and I feel so bad for them.
The indoor smoking for sure. Luckily smoking was outlawed where I live in like 2003… So when I went to a Chilis in Alabama in 2007 and was asked if I wanted smoking or non… I was in shock!
Those saying a house on one income wasn’t possible…my parents bought our 4 bedroom house in 1997 for 38,000$. That’s less than 400$ a month. I moved into an apartment 3 years later and paid more in rent than they did to buy! It was absolutely true. Not just my family but almost every one of my friends’ and acquaintances as well. My ex and I bought our 3 bedroom, 2 stall garage house in 2010 for 58,000$ and even that was affordable on one income! If I knew then what I know now I’d have fought to keep it in divorce. He still has the home and now it’s worth $160,000. His mortgage payment, under 600$. My one bedroom apartment? 650$. I’m happier than him though ha.
Many of these things still exist in more well-developed countries than the US
Let’s see:
One income
Already owning a house
Buying new cars as needed
Wow! Wish I lived in that version of the 90s!
1. Flew several times in the 90s- never got a meal.
2. We were a TWO
income family in our 30s when we bought our first house. The only way we could afford it was because it had been abandoned and we won the bid. Then we did all the fixing up by ourselves. Now it is paid for. Don’t claim it was easy for a one income family to buy a house during the 90s. Very few families could even afford to have one parent stay home. Either you were not an adult in the 90s or you were some rich person.
HR in the workplace has changed a lot. Now people can complain to HR even if they think you were thinking something racist.
A lot of these things were not true in the 90s! B
As a teacher, I’d say well-behaved kids and parents. Years ago parents taught their kids to respect their teachers, rules, and their peers. Now parents come to school to fight.
Freedom. Now we have a law for everything. One can be arrested for looking cross eyed. Or hiding your face as the twelve trillion cameras can’t track you.
