The holiday season is upon us, which means that people are once again thinking about their favourite holiday movies **cough DIE HARD.**
Of course, as is tradition, that means we get to talk about one of the greatest movies of our childhood, Home Alone.
You’ve probably already seen the yearly reminder, that yes, Macauley Culkin is indeed older now than Catherine O’Hara was when she played his mother in Home Alone.
But good news! The news is actually much worse!
In fact, Culkin has been older than Kate Mcallister for several years now. Catherine O’Hara was about 35 years old when Home Alone was released during the holidays in 1990. Culkin today is actually 42 years old. Meaning this “news” has been getting staler and more devastating for the last 7 years or so.
Let’s break that number down in a few more upsetting ways.
Macauley Culkin was 10 when Home Alone came out, and 12 when Home Alone 2: Lost in New York was released in 1992. That would put O’Hara at 35 and 37 years old respectively. So not only is he older now than she was for #1, he is older now than she was when the sequel hit theatres. Pretty awful stuff for us aging millennials isn’t it?
I was only 2 years old when the first film was released, but somehow my parents thought it would be a fantastic idea to let their two-year old watch, PRETTY MUCH on repeat, a film featuring the fairly agressive maiming of a pair of half-wit criminals. (I was also terrified of the “creepy shovel neighbour” character as I called him, which I only recently found out was actually named “Marley”).
Despite that, I loved the movie. So much so that I convinced my parents to let me see Lost in New York in theatres when it was released. Another great parenting win. My four-year old brain was not prepared to see Marv getting electrocuted on the big screen.
It seems pretty unreasonable and downright insulting that the child actor in movies I loved before I was even 5 years old is now a 42 year old man. The holidays are supposed to be about cheer, family, over eating, and even a little bit of gift-giving. It is profoundly not supposed to be a annual reminder that my bones not so slowly turning to dust.
Anyway, we are honoured to be the ones the bring you this yearly holiday upsetting news!
We aren’t getting any younger. But luckily we will always have awesome movies like Home Alone, and the indelible work of actors like Culkin, O’Hara, and John Candy (RIP) to take us right back to those childhood holiday memories of curling up on the couch for a fun flick in our jammies.
