Unsafe balconies

I don’t get it. I look at these things and I ask myself, who signed off on this? You have a balcony made of cardboard. Cardboard! In what world is that a load-bearing material? It’s paper! You step on it, you die. That’s the transaction. And people are just living there? They’re drinking coffee on a ledge held up by duct tape and hope? It’s insanity.

And then you have the unsafe balconies that aren’t even balconies. It’s a door that opens into nothing. A drop! Why put the door there? Is it for guests you don’t like? “Oh, thanks for coming, leave through the window.” It’s a architectural prank. It’s a spite balcony. I see these things and I feel like I’m the only sane person left. You have a street light going through the floor! How do you even build around that? Do you not see the giant pole?

We have curated a collection of the most dangerous, confusing, and poorly designed outdoor spaces ever photographed. These are balconies that ignore building codes, common sense, and the basic laws of gravity. Do not look down.

The urban jungle balcony is particularly disturbing. At a certain point, it is not an apartment anymore; it is a terrarium. Seeing how people adapt their living spaces is fascinating, but seeing how they disregard safety is terrifying. Please, for the love of architecture, do not try to build your own extension with packing tape.

If you enjoy seeing things that shouldn’t be built, there are plenty more disasters to explore. Check out construction fails, architecture humor, and diy disaster photos for more structural nightmares.
