Things People Ruined

You know the old saying, “This is why we can’t have nice things.” It’s usually a joke, but sometimes, it is a painful reality. Society operates on a fragile honor system. We assume that if a restaurant offers free refills, people won’t bring in a five-gallon bucket. We assume that if there’s a public restroom, people won’t try to dismantle the sink. But alas, we assume too much.

This list is a collection of tragedies. Not the life-or-death kind, but the annoying kind where a nice perk—like free leftovers or a fun senior prank—gets nuked from orbit because one guy decided to file a lawsuit or start a riot. It’s frustrating. It makes you want to hold a town hall meeting and just ask, “Who did this? Who ruined the breakfast buffet for the rest of us?”

Reddit post complaining about restrictions on effective over-the-counter medications like pseudoephedrine.

Reading these stories is a good way to raise your blood pressure. It really highlights the “tragedy of the commons.” When something is free or nice, there is always someone who thinks, “How can I exploit this until it breaks?” And then the rest of us are left standing there, paying full price for chicken because someone complained about the free stuff.

But hey, maybe reading this will inspire us to be better citizens. Or at least, it will inspire us to shame the people who leave public toilets in a state of disaster. We can only hope.
