Ok. So.
Tom Brady has obviously been in the news a lot lately. From (yet more) retirement speculation in the offseason, the shaky start in Tampa, the incredibly publicized divorce from Giselle, and now the financial quagmire of his involvement in FTX.
So I wasn’t initially surprised when I saw an announcement for a Tom Brady movie a while back. I didn’t look much into it – I figured it would be something along the lines of a fictionalized version of the excellent ESPN 30 for 30’s that he’s been featured in. Definitely something I would watch, but not something I really needed to do much digging into before it came out.
When the trailer dropped this past week, I figured. “ok cook let’s see what era of his career they are covering” (there are a million options given his GOAT status). My money was on either his draft story or his departure from New England and subsequent Superbowl win down in Tampa.
Good lord was I wrong.
The film appears to be about 4 elderly gals who are superfans of Lord Tom, embarking on a hilarious and heartwarming adventure to watch his final Superbowl run with the Patriots. And I gotta say, dear reader, I am 100 percent here for it.
Full marks on the casting. The film boasts Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin (awesome to see them bringing some of their “Gracie & Frankie” dynamic to the big screen), Rita Moreno, and the indelible Sally field as its main quartet of heroes. All four actors are bringing some serious Academy Award hardware to the table, and even from the trailer their chemistry shines. Bonus points for the Gronk fangirling.
“80 for Brady” is apparently based on a true story, which just adds so much more heart to the whole idea. It also proves that the Brady attraction spans all age groups. And walks of life. Including this humble writer *swoon.”
As a final note, I’m excited to see how much screen time Brady himself gets in the movie. He’s apparently been aware and involved in the whole process, and from the trailer that big beautiful smile definitely makes an appearance.
The film will premiere in February just before the Superbowl – maybe we’ll get some added magic if the man himself can drag the Bucs kicking and screaming to the championship.
And hey, maybe this will start turning things around news-wise for Tom. I doubt it though….what a mess.
